Just Style's Laura Husband sat down with SPESA President Michael McDonald in Philadelphia to discuss the current landscape for U.S. apparel manufacturing and why now is the time to invest in it. Notably, Mr. McDonald shares that it is his and SPESA's goal to draw attention to manufacturing efforts in the Western Hemisphere, and the World Fashion Convention set the stage to do so. He states: “When I joined the IAF I was adamant the Western Hemisphere is a re-emerging opportunity for manufacturing and IAF members should be interested in it.”

Former Under Armour CEO Heading New PET Textile Recycling Venture

Over the next decade, the demand for recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in textiles is expected to grow up to 30 metric tons per year. To help meet that demand, Paris energy transition technology business Technip Energies has partnered with Under Armour and IBM to launch Reju, a company focused on PET recycling. Led by former Under Armour CEO Patrik Frisk, Reju will use VolCat, an IBM technology produced in partnership with Under Armour and Technip, for rejuvenating waste PET packaging and polyester on an industrial scale. The technology acts as a molecular sorter, regenerating hard-to-recycle polyester garments and PET packaging that would otherwise end up in landfills.

Global Cotton Production Sees Slight Rise to 113.5 mn Bales: USDA

Global cotton production has seen a marginal increase, now totalling 113.5 million bales, according to the 2023-24 outlook of U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Cotton: World Markets and Trade report. This increase is primarily due to higher yields in Afghanistan, Argentina, the United States, and Paraguay, which have more than compensated for the reduced crops in Spain and Mexico.

Intermodal Shippers To Get Another US-Mexico Option in January

Zara Parent Company Inks $74M Deal for Recycled Polyester Material

Inditex entered a three-year agreement with Ambercycle, a company which developed a material, called Cycora, made from post-industrial and post-consumer polyester waste. Inditex is buying a “significant portion” of the annual production of Cycora for more than 70 million euros. The deal is meant to help scale the production of textile-to-textile recycled polyester and help Ambercycle support its first commercial-scale textile regeneration factory, which is expected to begin producing the material around 2025.

H&M Group Integrates AI for first Time with Custom Clothing Creation Tool

H&M Group’s print-on-demand merchandise service Creator Studio has unveiled the retail group’s first use of AI, with a generative AI-powered custom clothing creation tool. The new AI tool enables anyone to mock up and produce garments utilizing AI-generated custom visual artworks based on text input by the user. Meaning that anyone can play designer and create their own artist-quality designs in a matter of seconds.

University of Oregon Announces Sustainable Textile Facility Near New Portland Campus

The facility is part of an academic partnership with NTX, a Singapore-based company that makes textiles with waterless dying technology, which is more environmentally friendly than traditional methods. The multimillion-dollar facility will create a few dozen jobs, further cement Portland’s reputation as a hotbed of the sportswear industry, and could attract other research and development facilities. The supply chain company Luenthai also is partnering with NTX.
