The “greenest mill in the blue world” brings its technology one step closer to the end consumer in its latest retail endeavor.
Candiani Denim recently opened Candiani Custom, an extension of its existing Milan-based boutique that includes a microfactory specializing in made-to-measure jeans produced and washed on-site. The one-of-a-kind experience is based on the five pillars of personalization, transparency, sustainability, technology and Made in Italy.
The project involves several Italian supply chain partners including automatic fabric-cutter manufacturer FK Group, finishing technology firm Tonello, sewing machine manufacturer Sip Italy, textile chemical company Nearchimica, interlinings maker Cervo Tessile, trims manufacturers Cadica and Riri, and more.
“Thanks to their advanced technologies, some of which were developed exclusively for Candiani Custom, the project is a reshoring for Italian manufacturing, which combines every step in the production of a pair of jeans under one roof, in the heart of Milan,” the company stated. “Technology blends innovation and sustainability to deliver the best in luxury, quality and experience, including the speed of time to market.”
Housed in a storefront inspired by 1960s Milanese design, the customer becomes the designer at Candiani Custom. Each pair of custom jeans is guaranteed to be the customer’s perfect fit, designed from a bespoke fabric selection, including Candiani’s 100 percent biodegradable and compostable stretch fabrics made using Coreva technology. Customers then choose a wash or laser treatment, as well as details like buttons and rivets, sewing-thread color, and external back patch and embroidery options.
If customers want to try on sample jeans, the store has them available in men’s sizes 28-38 and women’s sizes 24-31. There are no size limitations, however, since the jeans are made-to-measure.
By designing exactly what the consumer wants, the mill aims to bypass the industry-wide problem of overproduction. The concept also reveals the hidden world of clothing manufacturing, which Candiani Denim has taken steps to make more transparent with an open mill day prior to the pandemic and Candiani Vision, a second storefront dedicated to teaching consumers about its Coreva technology.
“By involving the customer in every part of the experience, they are [immersed] into the process and able to create a more direct relationship with the world of manufacturing,” the mill stated.
The starting price for custom jeans is 245 euros (approximately $285) and they can go up to 435 euros ($505) depending on the various combinations of components. Jeans are made in 10-14 days.
